Name: JD
Record: Signal
Label: Independiente
Release date: June 2003
Who?: Karl Daniel aka Dready aka JD.
Age: 27
Sound: A fusion of bashment/dancehall, UK garage, hip hop and R&B.
Influences: Bob Marley, Dave Kelly, Tony Kelly, Megahertz, Just Blaze, Neptunes, Mario Winnans and Erick Sermon.
Most likely to be compared to: Any of the other So Solid Crew members, Beanie Man.
Musical CV: Remixes for Ms Dynamite, Un-Cut, and Ashanti. Produced Lisa Maffia's smash hit, All Over, forthcoming tracks for Mis-Teeq, Ms Dynamite, Lemar, Asher D, Beverley Knights, So Solid and has been in the studio with Beanie Man, Bounty Killah, Beanie Siegel and Memphis Bleek.
Ultimate Ambition: To be the next P Diddy
History: Originally from Birmingham, his parents were reggae artists and JD was flexing his skills in his dads studio from an early age. Aged only five he supported reggae supremo John Holt in concert. During his childhood years he mastered the drums, keyboard, saxophone, double bass and any piece of electrical equipment he could get his mitts on. So good was he in fact on drum machines, that at primary school he took some of music classes, his skills outweighing those of his teachers. After leaving school, JD set up dancehall label Roar in the '90s, and after his studio was robbed in 2001 he headed to London to try and crack the mainstream music industry. Shortly after his move, he met up with Megaman on the photoshoot for You Don't Know, and began producing tracks for So Solid artists, and in turn a whole heap of the hottest names on the UK urban block.
Highlights: "Becoming a father, you can't put that in words. It makes your drive twenty times stronger - and my drive was big anyway. I get on with everyone I work with, I have to, but working with Beanie and Memphis was mad. They were wary of the music but when they heard the beats and Asher D spitting, they were like ‘oh my gosh! This is ill!' It's the start of something big and when So Solid's second album drops things are really going to get moving in America."
Strengths: He has a number of talents and is genuinely entertaining, so if he fails in one area, he has other options. JD also reckons he's a good talker who can talk his way out of just about anything and everything.
Words: Chantelle Fiddy
