JD N JOKES
Friday ,27th August 2004
The man behind the beats is back in full LP effect. FIRST appearing on these pages TIME ago, JD has now hard grafted his way to a celebrity status others can only dribble over. Oh, and did we mention the hot new collab with killa kella?!?
Still, he's nowhere near finished. JD's debut offering is finally complete and on the verge of blowin' up big stylee. So, RWD just had to talk to him. For a 3rd time. Yea dat's right. Shamone. A third time. Cos he's worth it. Not only have we got the album to get excited about, but a collabo with this one dude who has to be, quite simply, the baddest beat boxer in the world. Yes. The world, planet, all continents. Shizzle. It's Killa Kella my brethrens. Yes. We talked to him too...Bring it awwn!
“It's an up and up album man...tracks 1 to 17 are my favourite innit! Each tune has its own element... The album represents my life and my character: a joker! But at the same time too, a serious musician. I'm just having fun with the music man! Everyone's so serious all the time and gats and clips and that, I'm trying to bring the fun element to it...nothing's wrong with the badness if that's what you wanna do but with JD, it's a different style to the game.”
Since JD and I last spoke, we complained, somewhat, at the lack of an ethic so necessary in the making of quality music. A concept the British industry either forgot about, or were just too greedy to even recollect...working toooogetherrrr...now though, things have changed. Slightly. And JD's eruption onto the scene has played a major role in that change.
“In my terms, I just use what I have to my advantage. I know certain people want certain beats so, I call ‘em into the studio and give ‘em what they want and that starts to build up the unity...”
Any favourite recording sessions?
“Beverly Knight”
He says this before I even finish my question!
“I get on with everyone innit but Bevery Knight man...goosebumps on my neck to this day! She's just so professional...I got her to re-vocal the remix I did to her first single, ‘Come as You Are’ and that was probably the easiest session I ever done in my life, the whole track took about 2 hours...she's a proper diva.”
Well she's certainly paid her dues that's for sure. Much like JD, who, as well as making his own music and remixing and producing for anyone who's anyone, he also loves to dedicate plenty of time to the community. He's judged at the ‘Jump Off’ more times than I can remember and every time I'm ever speaking on any college youth centre university panel, who's there with mike in hand? Mr. JD. Matter of fact; is there anything he DOESN'T do???
“I wanted to do this before I could talk! So when you reach a certain position I feel it's important to talk to the kids and guide them on achieving their dreams... I've still got a long way to go but I love what I'm doing and if it has anything to do with good music, I'm doing it! Writing, performing, producing, guidance - I love it all...there's isn't a specific way to get into the music business, cos it's different for everyone, I just packed my s*it from Birmingham and came to London, but really it's all about timing”
How is Birmingham these days?
“It's good, the talent's thriving and it's really impressive.
Not as impressive as having Killa Kella appear on your debut album..Yo! To the beat box!
“I met JD in Miami, we were both appearing on Westwood's show, I did my thing - he liked it, he played “Signal”, I loved it, and it went from there... JD's got all the charisma, ethic and style of a true musician...performing with him is always so crazy and spontaneous and that's what music's all about really. Everything comes from his heart, he's edgy, he's different and he's dope - it was a pleasure working with him”
If you're yet to see Killa Kella live, then what are you doing with your life? Seriously? The sounds that unfold from such a softly spoken mouth are astounding. So much so, that I had to see him 3 times before I was convinced this man was for real. A belligerent mix of chopping and changing between D&B, hip hop, ragga and even garage. He sings on top of the beat too. No for real. He does. And now, he too has an album on the way after signing with RCA/BMG!
“It's still in production but so far I got Neneh Cherry and Dizzee Rascal appearing.”
THAT is dope.
“Yea it's exciting, I got my collective on there too, “Spit Kingdom” and loads of productions from people like Whookid and Sweetie Irie... it's an album that'll definitely surprise people, it's not at all what people expect from Killa Kella. I'm experimenting with many different vocal disciplines and really putting myself across more as an all round artist.”
Fan-bloody-tastic. Dizzee and Kella? Furthermore, Kella and Neneh Cherry? d**n. I can't wait.
“The first single's “Jawbreaker” and that's out real soon so check it out”.
Oh for shizzle. And for all those wanting to experience the Killa Kella sound live, head down to Spit Kingdom Headquarters (SKHQ) every Tuesday @ Herbal in Shoreditch, East London!
