LISA MAFFIA Lisa Maffia, 26, one of the few to use her real name on stage, grew up on a sprawling estate in Brixton, south London, dreaming of a career in photography until the birth of her young daughter Chelsea and cash- flow problems put paid to that ambition. Music was a hobby she turned into a career as the lead vocalist in the crew. She sang "Oh No, Skyla", " Deeper" and "21 Seconds", a video which also featured her daughter, who was four at the time. She went on to appear on the Channel 4 reality series The Games, in which she competed on the athletics track against the likes of Kirsty Gallacher, who just managed to beat her. But her primary interests remain in music. She has her own label Maffia Records. Distancing herself from the Crew commercially, she has forged ahead with plans for her solo career. Her first solo single "All Over" did very well but later songs and the album First Lady failed to impress as much. She has recently released another solo and is concentrating, through her label, on the band North Star, which won the Channel U Best of British award. Lisa has worked with charities such as the children's charity NSPCC and studiously avoided some of the problems that have beset other members. She said: recently: "When people say we're glorifying guns I get really upset it's just the opposite. The rise of the urban scene has got a lot of people off the streets." you can read the rest here enjoyment.independent.co.uk/music/features/article323501.ece
